A smoke seal is installed to divide a wall or a floor area into compartments. This is intended to stop the spreading of fire or smoke for a predetermined time period.

In practical terms, we can find it in a joint between a wall and a tile or in a hole in a floor (or a wall) made to allow the passage of mechanical pipes.
